Norfolk, Nebraska Travel Guide

Complete Vacation, Recreation and Tourism Information

The name "Norfolk" originated as "Norfork" in 1881. But, the Postal Service, believing that it was a misspelling, "corrected" it to Norfolk. And, Norfolk it has been ever since.

The hometown of Johnny Carson is an active place with plenty of outlets for fun and recreation. There are numerous restaurants, pubs, and fast food venues. Where shopping is concerned, Norfolk has everything from trucking needs to baby furniture.

Sporting fun is part of the culture here. The more fun, the better. Two public golf courses, and a multitude of others within a short drive, keep the swingers smiling.

Hiking, biking, equestrian, and nature trails originate in Norfolk at the Cowboy Trail. Passing farmlands and forests, it rivets its way westward through the Elkhorn River Valley, following the route of the old railroad. Starting from Norfolk, a continuous 102.5-mile run awaits with exquisite countryside and charming small communities along the way. Camping is also available at various trail locations.

Camping, fishing and canoeing are found at beautiful TaHaZouka Park. The 99-acre recreational park centers around a lovely lagoon and large, mature trees. A fishing platform is available at the lagoon for handicapped persons. And along with ball fields and camping cabins, there's also a 9-hole disc golf course that offers a challenging game to even skilled players.

Skyview Lake Park has facilities for paddleboating, fishing, hiking and biking. In winter, it becomes the focus of ice fishing activities. Handicapped access is provided with a 100-foot T-shaped fishing pier. Recently, the park underwent an extensive $204,000 restoration with sediment removal and the construction of two jetties. In 2002, an 18-hole disc golf course was added to augment the already-dynamic recreational amenities.

Skyview also offers cross-country skiing, a 2.5-mile hiking/biking trail, a large playground for children, and a lovely arboretum.

Norfolk is located in northeastern Nebraska about 113 miles northwest of Omaha.
